Stone Tavern at Roney's Point

The Stone Tavern at the intersection of National Road and Roney's Point Road was built soon after the National Road was surveyed through Ohio County in 1806. The historical marker reads:

Roney's Point: Here is located the historic 'Heimberger House,' one of the first and most famous of the numerous stopping places which sprang up to serve the traffic on the National Road. Still standing, it is now called the 'Old Stone House.'

The Stone Tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places, February 11, 1993.

▶ Read the National Register Nomination form: Stone Tavern at Roney's Point

-from The WPA Guide, "WEST VIRGINIA: A Guide to the Mountian State," 1941, pg. 516-517.

RONEYS POINT, 5.1 m. (830 alt., 213 pop.), a shipping center for the Ohio County Farmers' Co-operative Association, was a lively spot in the days when stagecoaches of Good Intent and Sims lines carried gay parties of travelers to the OLD STONE TAVERN (R), which remains much as it was when built in 1818. A sunburst transom over the door, the old woodwork, and the massive fireplaces are still in place. Originally a two-story stone building with 11 rooms and a large hall, it was enlarged years later with a 9-room addition.
