The Grand Central Hotel in Wheeling

A seven-story structure, the Grand Central Hotel was built at 1145-47 Market St. by businessman E. B. Potts. The Security Trust Co. found temporary quarters in the former Grand Central Hotel, sometimes referred to as the "Potts Buiding," at 1145-47 Market St, securing the rights to the first floor of the hotel in December of 1902, opening February 27, 1903. It remained in the hotel until November 28, 1917, when it moved into its "new and handsome building at 1143 Market street, one door east of the old quarters."

Following the vacating of Security Trust Co., Hoge-Davis Drug Co. leased the first floor of the hostelry from 1918 to 1927.

On Aug 26, 1922, the E. B. Potts sold the hotel to Jacob Sentlinger, Jr. for $175,000, setting a record price per foot for a Market Street property.

The Grand Central Hotel Building was sold again for $175,000 in 1924 to Julius Goldman Stores, Inc., of New York with plans to convert the building into a clothing store on the first two floors. The company was already operating another retail clothing store, the People's Store, in Wheeling.

In October of 1929, it was renamed the Jefferson Hotel. The Jefferson Hotel went into bankruptcy in February of 1933. The Jefferson Hotel moved into the old Stamm House Hotel on Water Street in June of 1936 and the old hotel building was torn down to "make room for the construction of a five and ten cent store of the J. C. McCrory company."
