Mabel M. Hull Scrapbooks

About this collection:

➤ Mabel M. Hull, newspaper reporter, wrote about African American life for the Wheeling Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register from the 1940s through the early 1960s.  She also wrote a column entitled “Breezes from Wheeling” which was published in the Pittsburgh Courier, the influential African American newspaper published in Pittsburgh. The collection consists of five scrapbooks compiled by Hull which contain clippings of her columns from both the Wheeling papers and the Pittsburgh Courier.  Her dispatches document African American life in mid-century Wheeling, WV. Hull reports on prominent African American leaders visiting Wheeling, notable church activities, weddings, and other social activities.  Several of the institutions often mentioned include the Blue Triangle Branch of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YMCA), Lincoln School, Wayman AME Church, Macedonia Baptist Church and the Wheeling branch of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
