William Carney Collection on Wheeling Crime, 1900-2017
About this collection:
➤ The collection consists of the research files compiled by William Carney, Wheeling historian, with additional material later compiled by his son Brent Carney. The material consists primarily of photocopies of Wheeling newspaper clippings regarding Bill Lias, Paul Hankish, their associates and other crime related stories. The first set of files, which contain clippings and research notes, are organized chronologically, from 1901 to 2017. Other material includes clippings and notes arranged by subject and individuals. Of particular interest are detailed chronologies, penned by William Carney, for various individuals, subjects, and criminal trials. The collection also includes photographs of Lias and associates, ephemera, and books published about crime in Wheeling and the surrounding Ohio Valley. Notable individuals and institutions include Carl Bachmann, Joseph Cambria, Harry T. Clouse, Harry Hamm, Paul Hankish, Big Charlie Kapchuk, Alice Lias, Gladys Lias, Charles Margiotti, Nick Miller, Danny Phillips, Mike Russell, Theodore Russell, George Seibert, Zellers Steak House, Club Diamond, 1400 Block of Market Street and Wheeling Downs.
