Wheeling historian Margret Brennan will discuss the life and times of Agnes Westbrook Morrison (1854-1939), the first woman to graduate from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1895, and only the sixth woman law school graduate in the entire country.
Born in Wheeling, she practiced law in the city with her husband, Charles Morrison. Agnes became an advocate for women’s rights and education, and was known as the “Mother of Clubs” in Wheeling. She founded the Collegiate Alumnae of Wheeling, was involved in the early days of the woman’s club, and set up a woman’s literary club. Agnes was also the third state president of the West Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs. She is buried in the Washington Cemetery in Pennsylvania. (text by Margaret Brennan)
