People's University: The Civil War 1865 & the Lincoln Legacy

The latest series in the People's University program at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling will focus on the closing battles of the Civil War, and the assassination and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln and the struggles of veterans returning from war. Classes will meet on consecutive Tuesday evenings at 7 PM, from March 3 through April 21 in the library's auditorium.


Class 2 Sherman in the Carolinas

“Nothing Was Held Sacred” - Sherman in the Carolinas

Most are familiar with General William T. Sherman’s ‘March to the Sea.’ This class will examine Sherman’s turn to the north to the Carolina’s, culminating in the battles of Averasboro and Bentonville.

Mark SmithInstructor: Mark A. Smith

Mark A. Smith is a U. S. Army veteran (Major, ret.) with 21 years of service. He holds a BS from Slippery Rock University and a MA of Military Studies – Civil War from American Military University.  An avid Civil War historian, Smith has co-authored with Wade Sokoloski, No Such Army since the Days of Julius Caesar: Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign from Fayetteville to Averasboro.  Smith has conducted several battlefield tours at Averasboro and has been a guest speaker at several CWRTs.
