LUNCH WITH BOOKS: Reliving the Pythian with Darryl Clausell

January 17, 2023
12:00pm - 1:00pm

LUNCH WITH BOOKS: Reliving the Pythian with Darryl Clausell

Darryl Clausell, longtime President of the Wheeling Branch of the NAACP and retired coordinator of Continuing and Community Education at West Virginia Northern Community College will discuss the history of the African American Pythian building on Chapline Street. Home of the Fedo theatre, the Pythian was a cultural, and social center for the Black community during Wheeling’s era of Jim Crow segregation. The building played host to many famous musicians and performers, such as Bessie Smith and James Brown, among others. A critical part of Wheeling’s history, efforts are being made to preserve and restore the Pythian building.

In addition to being in-person in the Library auditorium, this program will be available to watch live on Facebook Live, on YouTube, and on the OCPL website's LWB Livestream page Log into your Facebook or YouTube account during the program to leave questions for our presenters in the comments box. They will answer them during the live broadcast.
