About this collection:
➤ Kathryn Snead was born in Wheeling on March 11, 1918 to Charles and Phoebe Williams. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Wheeling, West Virginia University and also Ohio University. She later taught at Lincoln School and also Ohio University Eastern. She died in St. Clairsville, Ohio on May 17, 2016. This collection consists primarily of photographs that depict African American life in Wheeling, West Virginia. Of note are the two photographs of the men and women in the Beau Brummel Organization, 1958. Also of note is the circa 1885 photograph of a class at the Lincoln School and a photograph of the first African American policeman, William “Bill” Turner. Also included is a photograph of a group of African American and white women standing next to a West Virginia WPA (Works Progress Administration) sign, circa 1938.
