About this collection:
➤ The former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Follansbee Coke plant was owned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Corp. and known as Mountain State Carbon at the time of its closing in 2022. The company cited it was enacting measures to reduce its carbon footprint as reasons for closing the plant. The closing displaced 288 workers, of which 280 were members of the United Steelworkers Union.
This collection is predominantly objects that were removed from the Follansbee Coke Plant just after its closing. One box contains photographs labeled "Wheeling Steel Research Laboratory" and dated 1961. The photos are undated but presumed to be of the Coke Plant.
