About this collection:

➤ Main Street America was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a movement that is committed to revitalizing communities through preservation-based economic development in older and historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts through grassroots efforts.

Wheeling was first incorporated as a Main Street community in 1987 and maintained an office, director position, and the Main Street volunteer committees until 1990.  The organization worked by promoting downtown businesses, creating events that led traffic to those businesses, conducting surveys of business owners and visitors, and organizing committees that were made up of volunteers from the community.
