About this collection:
➤ William A. “Bill” Carney, Jr. was born on December 12, 1938 to William A. and Lucille Carney in Wheeling, WV. He graduated from Warwood High School in 1957, served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and then began working for the Wheeling Steel Company (later the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company) in 1958. He worked for the company for forty two years until he retired in 2001. Carney was active in the Wheeling Area Historical Society, authored many pieces for the Upper Ohio Valley Historical Review and in 2002 was given the History Hero Award by the State of West Virginia. Carney also compiled two Arcadia Press volumes on the history of Wheeling: Wheeling (2003), part of the Images of America series, and co-authored with his son Brent Carney, and Wheeling in Vintage Postcards (2003), part of the Postcard History Series. Carney died on May 5, 2003 in Wheeling.
The collection consists of clippings and research files compiled by Carney on the history of Wheeling and the surrounding Upper Ohio Valley. Topics include local buildings, business, events, prominent citizens, cultural institutions, parks, schools and churches. Carney was especially interested in sports, crime and early Wheeling history. The collection also includes material about natural disasters such as floods and storms, in addition to mine disasters and labor disputes. Carney also collected information about individuals who were born in the region and went on to succeed in acting, business, sports, writing and other fields. Several boxes in the collection consist of material from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, such as annual reports, clippings, newsletters and memorabilia.
