About this collection:

➤ Alma Hine Hickman was born in Toledo, Ohio on October 2, 1907 to Milton Cady Hine and Grace Gretchen Hine. The family later moved to Wheeling, West Virginia and Milton served as the manager of WaddingtonFarms, which later became Oglebay Park. The Hickman family was friends with the Howard family and often visited Howard Place. Located on the hilltop along National Road between Edgwood and Elm Grove, overlooking Greenwood Cemetery, Howard Place was the originally the home of J. A. Howard. The mansion, designed by Wheeling architect Frederick Faris, was built between 1903 and 1906.

The collection consists of 29 photographs of the Howard Place farm and estate, circa 1910.  Two photographs depict the Howard Place mansion, designed by Frederick Faris, while the rest of the images consist of the surrounding landscape.  Many photographs are taken on top of the hill and depict the road leading up to the estate as well as National Road and Greenwood Cemetery.  There is also one photograph of individuals sitting on a bench with the following inscription on the back:  “Possibly J.A. Howard, Jane Howard, Eugene Keith Hine (picture could have been taken by Archie Hine, mgr., and brother of Keith.)
